About Dry Creek Valley

One of the smallest and most compact AVAs in California — 16 miles long, two miles wide, no traffic lights, one deli, and over 70 wineries. Located just northwest of Healdsburg in northern Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley has 140 years of winegrowing history and is the spiritual home of California Zinfandel. The valley floor is gravelly sandy loam; the surrounding benches and hills are composed of strikingly red gravelly clay loam that drains exceptionally well, stressing vines late in the season and concentrating varietal character. Old-vine Zinfandel blocks — some surviving Prohibition — still stand untellised, their gnarled trunks a testament to time. Beyond Zinfandel, the valley produces exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rhône and Italian varietals. The culture here is family-owned, multi-generational, and fiercely independent — corporations do not have a toehold.
